East < GO > West

In McCook Route 66 bypasses a large limestone quarry by veering right onto 55th St. from Joliet Road and turns south on the west end at East Ave. to Joliet Rd. Turn left at East Rd and Joliet Rd onto the dead end for a photo op of the quarry and a half block or so of old Route 66.

The bypass opened in 1998 after the old road across the quarry buckled. Vulcan Materials Company owns the property on both side of Route 66 of the bypassed section is about nine tenths of a mile.

xThis is the west end of 1929-1976 alignment of Route 66, East Ave.& Joliet Rd, in McCook. I walked up to the fence that keeps you from driving or walking out onto the old road to get the first photo on this page

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
