The Joliet Correctional Center (Joliet Prison) was used from 1858 to 2002. There is an adjacent parking lot and park with several signs that offer historic information. The early Route 66 (Pontiac Trail) went by this prison.

xThis is a large prison, but there are a couple of places where you can get a photo of the whole building. A stone, steel and barbed wire entry sign was added in 2009 when the parking lot surface was replace and plantings and flowers added.

The Blues Brothers movie showed the East gate.

xA now closed and much smaller women's prison building is located just across the street from the entrance to the men's prison.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
