This building was built in 1884 as a Opera House by John Sebastian Trares. - It was known as Tuxhorn Opera House because it was managed for years by the Tuxhorn brothers. The opera house was on the second floor and was, when built, connected to the the St. James Hotel which was located next to it. Laurie's Place was located here for over 20 years but closed at the end of 2017. Two new businesses will be opening here in 2019.

xThis mural was on the side of the Opera House Building in 2018. It was painted in 2005 by artists from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. It was designed by Jason Bly who was the lead artist of the mural. It has been removed since I snapped this photo.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
