The Star News building was completed in 1925 and the paper continued to
publish here under a series of owners until 1990. The building was designed
by architect Joseph Block in a Beaux-Arts style. It also has a Penthouse
and two levels below grade. The sign on the corner is not original to
the building. There used to be radio broadcast towers on the roof that
served the newspapers KPSN newscasts. The towers also carried the signal
of the famed underground station KPPC-FM that originated in a studio in
a nearby church.
The
Star-News name appears above the front entrance with its original inset
clock. The deep set doors and windows illustrate how thick the glazed
terracotta faced concrete walls are. Even with two below grade levels
the upper structure had to support tons of newspaper equipment.

About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
Did
You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
