Desert Inn / Riverstone Apts.

625 W Broadway, Needles, CA

East < GO > West

The early 1950s Desert Inn Motel had 25 guest rooms, an early postcard claimed it was Needles newest auto court. It much later became the Riverstone Apartments a senior living center. The postcard mentioned below simply used the name "Desert Inn", but the actual sign shown on the front ofd the card showed the name as "Desert Inn Motel".

It is located at 625 Broadway across the street from the Imperial 400 Motel

(Early 1950s postcard)
The Desert Inn.
Center of town on Broadway
(U.S. Highway 66) Needles, Calif.
Needles' newest Auto Court.
25 luxuriously furnished rooms,
Individual thermostat controlled air conditioning for your particular comfort. Running ice water,
Telephone service,
The newest thing in beds (7 foot for a solid restful sleep).
Electric blankets.
AAA and Automobile Club of Southern California Approved.

Note: The postcard doesn't give an actual address. Two other things struck me as being kind of unusual in this description of the motels features. The first was the mention of electric blankets, it almost sounds like the electric blankets take the place of heating in the rooms, no mention of things like heat otherwise. The second is the line about air conditioning "for your particular comfort", that's just an odd turn of phrase.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
