        > Pendergast MotelRoute 66, Ludlow, CAPhone:

The former Pendergast Motel stands abandoned and slowly fading into the
desert. You wonder what the sign out front advertised. Pendergast served
as the Constable in Ludlow from the 30s to the 60s. The sign pole makes
it look like they also sold gas here at some point. In the 1920s the post office was reportedly located in this building
too, but I doubt that because a serious fire in 1931 destroyed several
buildings in town, including the post office. Those buildings were located
on Main Street by the railroad tracks. From its beginning until 1961
Ludlow only had three postmasters. More likely is that after the earlier
Post Office burned in 1931 this became the new location. In
2013 this was the only remaining of at least 5 guest cabins that were
part of the Pendergast Motel. In some vintage photos the cabins all
appear to be on the west side of the main building, but "Motel"
signs appear both the east and west of that building. The site seems
to have been divided by Elliot St. at some point in time and this cabin
is on the west side of the street.
