Take note of the elevation at 2595 feet. that is 2000 feet higher than Needles. So basically you've been going uphill since you left Needles. Goffs is the high point between Needles and Amboy for the railroad.

That was true for cars on the old road too, but it wasn't all dowhill from heere to Amboy for them. Like for the railroad, the Mother Road dropped down to about 800 feet at Essex but the the road then climbs to about 1300 feet at the Cadiz Summit before dropping down again to about 800 feet at Chambless, the railroad went around that mountain.
