East < GO > West

Originally each guest room had a carport, but by the mid 50s the carports were gone having been converted to guest rooms. In 1955 the motel was advertised as having 14 units, eight with kitchenettes and a new cafe as well as a 6-1/2 room owners/managers apartment.

In 2016 the motel was listed for sale as a package with the Topper Motel and the former El Carlos Motel . That ad listed the Sunset Inn (Casa Loma) as as having 17 units. The ad listed the property as being built in 1936, but didn't specify which motel that referred to, Still that date would seem reasonable for the Casa Loma (Sunset) considering the architectural style of the original building having carports. Jack Rittenhouse mentioned the Casa Loma in his 1946 "A Guide Book to Highway 66".

xWhat is now the office was not part of the original motel building. There's no cafe here now. I'm guessing based on all the windows in this addition that it was the 1955 cafe mentioned above.

xI'm not sure just when the motel was renamed the Sunset Inn but apparently in the time between it known as the 860 West Motel for some time.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
