Mountain Man Trail is the 1926 to 1931 alignment of Route 66. The old alignment starts just past the cattle guard in this photo. (To get here, turn off the main road at the signs for Bearizona, but keep going past their entrance driveway). The pavement ends at the cattle guard.

GPS: 35.255728, -112.150822

The second sign in this photo says "Low Maintenance Road" which I think that is code for turn around in wet or bad weather! From the Bearizona entrance to this point is a newer road paved. Going west the old road went straight from here instead of making the gentle curve north to the Bearizona entrance..

xShortly after you start east on Mountain Man Road you'll come to this sort of wye in the road, keep left.

xThe "Low Maintenance" aspect of the road shows up in wet weather with spots like this or bigger stretches of mud.

xThe first (only) stop sign you'll come to is Garland Prairie Road, the road continues about 4/10 of a mile beyond this intersection before splitting into a couple of private drives. You can turn north here to get to I-40 exit 167, or turn around and double back to the Bearizona intersection.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
