The Cow Canyon bridge on the original alignment of Route 66 is best seen from the eastbound lanes of I-40. The bridge is on the south side of I-40 between milepost 236 and 237. Look for the wash bridge just east of the off ramp to the rest area on the westbound lanes, the historic bridge is a couple hundred feet south of the eastbound freeway lanes. This is a small bridge appearing to be only about 30 feet long and 18 or 20 feet wide.

The bridge is about 2.5 miles west of the Meteor City Trading Post and about 3.5 miles east of the Meteor Crater exit.

GPS: 35.100789, -110.987049

Just east of the bridge about .6 miles is about where the original alignment of Route 66 was intersected by I-40. The old road would have crossed I-40 at an angle so it would have crossed the westbound freeway lane right at the railroad bridge a couple hundred feet farther east than where it would have crossed the eastbound lanes.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
