St. Michael's Catholic Church occupies the former Lockwood Cafe. The cafe opened in 1937 and featured "Chicken in the Rough", "Every Bite A Tender Delight", which was a finger food, style fried chicken, no silverware needed. Adding the chicken to the menu involved becoming one of the earliest restaurant franchisees.

xThe sign over the front door appears to be the original sign-can just painted over and with the cross added. The sign originally simply said "Lockwood Cafe".

xI find the small details on vintage signs to be interesting design elements.

The church and the motorcycle shop next door share one of the round top pole sign out front. The east side of the sign advertises the church. The west side advertises the motorcycle shop, a sort of sign sharing I guess.

Note: The front of this postcard showed the text on the sign above the door only said " Lockwood Cafe". A sign painted in one of the windows said "Chicken in the Rough".

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
