The Globetrotter Lodge was originally the first Whiting Brothers Motor Hotel in Holbrook. In the early 1960s it was managed by Al. & Helene Frycek who eventually bought the property and renamed it the Sun & Sand Motel. The Frycek family went on to run the motel until 2001 when they closed it.

In 2002 the then closed motel was pressed into use as emergency shelter during a nearby wildfire event, after which it went back to closed status. It was 8 more years before the property reopened with new owners in 2010.

It's a little hard to find the number of units at different times in the motels history, and they varied a lot. A one time while it was a Whiting Brothers property it had 57 units, some of those were the result of adding the two-story building behind the original building. When it was advertised for sale in 2018 it was listed as having 10 open units and 14 non-operating units, for a total of 24. It got new owners in 2020 and hopefully they'll be able to continue the renovations the previous owners started and reopen more of the rooms. The is two-story building behind the main building is now long term apartments.

Looking at the photo above and the postcard below you can see that the motel has had some major redesigns over the years.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
