This business opened by the Homer Zettler family in 1930 as the City Bakery. In 1940 they added a small grocery section in the store. In 1946 when their son Vern returned from the war he and his wife bought the business and ran it until they retired in 1984. They then sold the store to Mary Ann Breon. She kept the Zettler's name on the store and operated it until 2012 when the business closed.

xIn 2016 it reopened with new owners as more of a gift shop, changing the name slightly to Zettler's Route 66 Store. When we stopped by in 2017 the place was packed full of cool stuff. The store closed again in 2017 but new owners may reopen it in late 2021.

xThere's a neat mural on the east wall of the store. It says "Serving Route 66 Since 1929. Other sources say the store opened in 1930, these dates get a little fuzzy sometimes (often?).

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
