East < GO > West

Two sets of Robinson Grain Elevators are located on Route 66 just past Hwy. 207 in Conway. Grain elevators at this location date back to 1914. They stand beside the abandoned roadbed of the Chicago, Rock Island and Gulf Railway.

This section of Route 66 (Farm Road 2161) is the longest and best preserved section of Route 66 in Texas. Starting at Hwy. 207 in Conway it runs west for 7.2 miles and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.

It became part of Route 66 in 1930 and was paved that same year. The Mother Road wasn't realigned until the 1970s by which time even small American cars were 6 feet wide and some were nearly 7 feet wide and trucks could approach 8 feet wide. The pavement is only 19 feet 2 inches wide and the shoulders are only 2 feet 10 inches wide. Not much room to pull over if you had a flat tire or other car trouble.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
