Will Rogers Highway / Grand River Dam Marker

U.S. 69 & North 4440 Rd, Vinita, OK
Phone:

East < GO > West

This marker not only commorates the Will Rogers Memorial Highway but also the Grand River dam. It is located across the road from McDougal Filling Station. This can be a little confusing because of the location of the marker at this intersection, the crossroad here S. 4440, does not take you to the dam. But to get to the dam you need to backtack about a mile towards Afton to highway 82 and turn south.

The text about the dam reads:

"GRAND RIVER DAM
14 MILES S.E. IS LANGLEY THE SITE OF THE GRAND RIVER DAM LAKE COVERING 45,000 ACRES. WITH A SHORE LINE OF 1100 MILES, COSTING MORE THAN $20,000,000.00. THE LARGEST MULTIPLE TYPE ARCH DAM ON EARTH. IT WAS CONSTRUCTED AS AN ELECTRIC AND FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT. EXCELLENT FISHING, BOATING, RECREATION AND SCENIC FACILITIES ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

ERECTED AS A PUBLIC SERVICE BY CITIZENS OF LANGLEY, OKLAHOMA.
Marker #A-12"

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
