Longhorn Trading Post

Grand Ave.& Route 66, Texola, OK
Phone:

East < GO > West

The Longhorn Trading Post building was originally the Friendly Cafe. Scroll down to see n early postcard for the cafe that appears to be from the late 1920s or 30s.

The building is still standing but in pretty rough shape. Vernon Bailey ran the Longhorn for a time and a 1989 newspaper article shows him parking his tractor in the middle of the street with the caption saying it creates no traffic jams.

A smaller building on the west side of the Longhorn looks like it may have been a gas station or simply some sort of accessory building. When these photos were snapped in 2015 you could still see the Longhorn name on the trading post.

The wood panels on the west end of the building appear to be a set of sliding garage doors. These must have been added after the Longhorn closed.

During the heyday of Route 66 this was a busy intersection with businesses on all four corners. On the SE corner are a couple of other buildings one of which looks like a cottage style gas station.

On the NW is a bare concrete slab next to an abandoned commercial building of some sort.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
