East < GO > West

Alan Threatt, Sr built this gas station with rock from his family's nearby quarry when he learned that the road on the north side of his property would become Route 66. Some sources claim the station was built in 1915 but the style of the building more supports the mid-to-late 1920s time period. Groceries were added in the mid-1930s. .The station is located 3 miles east of Luther on Route 66, (Route 66 & Countyline Rd, SW corner, left side).

GPS: 35.666356, -97.141483

In 1937 Alan's son married a school teacher who opened a cafe next to the station. She worked the cafe before and after teaching school during the day. I'm not sure this is the cafe building, but it is right next to the station and looks like it could have been a cafe.

Afican-Americans themselves the Threatt station and cafe catered to African American travelers during a period when segregation was common. At least one source says they cleared a bit of land behind the station where travelers could camp for the night.

xWhat's left of the sign post out front still had its light fixtures on it 2016 but the sign itself was long gone. The original gas pumps were the "visible" style with markings for each gallon ready for dispensing. The clear glass cylinder was typically filled by hand pumping in the desired amount of gas and then emptying it into a car's gas tank. Newer 1940s style pumps with Conoco globes on top eventually replaced the earlier models, but none are in place now.

The Threatt station was place on the NRHP in 1995

xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
