Rock-Of-Ages Conoco Station

Route 66, Luther, OK

East < GO > West

The stone Rock-Of-Ages Conoco station appears to have been built in the mid 1910s to early 1920s and operated until sometime in the 1930s. Besides gasoline, oil and kerosene, legend has it that candy and soda were sold with some limitations, candy when it was cold enough outside that it wouldn't melt and soda when the ice man had come by with ice to keep the soda cold in the summer. Three visible gas pumps stood in front of the two columns near the road. The columns supported a canopy over a service drive.

It is located on Route 66 just past Indian Meridan, on Rock of Ages Hay Farm property.

x The station was heated with a wood burning fireplace which is shown in this photo. It seems like kerosene and oil were stored in 55 gallon drums and dispensed through a simple spigot, that part is a little fuzzy though. As the story goes it seems that in the 1930s there was some fuss about some counterfit money being manufactured in the backroom which led directly to the stations closing and never reopening.

x You might not expect to find a window box full of flowers in the middle of a gas station ruins, but here it is! Adds a little fun to the stop.

The station is owned by the folks from the Rock of Ages Farm who have kindly placed a small sign at the station telling its story.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
