The Bunion Derby Historical Marker is tucked under a couple trees on the east end of town at 4th Street & Andy Payne Blvd. The Bunion Derby formally known as the 1st Annual Inernational Trans-Continental Footrace" was promoted as "C.C. Pyle's. The race from Los Angeles to New York City took 84 days, from March 4, 1928 to May 26, 1928 and measured 3,423.3 miles.

x The race followed Route 66 from Los Angeles to Chicago and was promoted by the US Highway 66 Association to make the Mother Road America's premiere highway. The association put up the $25,000.00 dollars for the first place prize.

The monument tells us that Andy payne was a 1927 graduate of Foyil High School who practiced for the race by running 5 miles to school each day.
