The Key's Continental Service Station (Conoco) at 323 S Broadway building features streamline modern with rounded corners. It was built by George Deal and leased to Herb Keys in 1938. The station had the "latest and best equipment" including a Vapo-spray" steam washer. There were originally 3 "computing" pumps on a single island. Computing meant they measured the gas pumped and displayed the price per gallon, the amount of gas pumped and the total price on the face for the customer or attendants convenience.

At some point the office portion of the station was enlarged, maybe because Deal, the local Conoco Distributor, had his business office here. The canopy over the drive is a later addition. The building was a used car lot when we snapped this photo in 2017 so it was hard to get a good image of the building.

Keys first Conoco station at this intersection was located on the southwest corner as part of the Royce Cafe and Adamson Service Station. Adamson leased the station business to George Deal in 1936, but kept the cafe. Key's operated the station.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
