We happened to spot the very cool old Chandler High School while going around the block for other reasons, that sort of chance discovery is one of the more fun parts of traveling Route 66. It is the largest WPA* built school in Lincoln County, Oklahoma.

Construction began on the school in early 1940 but ran into financial troubles in 1941. Because of funding work on the school was an on again off again thing until it was finished in the summer of 1942. It opened on September 7, 1942 and continued to operate as a school until 1994. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

x The T shaped building is built in the Moderne style. Directly behind the central two story portion of the building is a large auditorium that makes up the third leg of the "T" shape of the building. .The north and south wings are one story.

Engraved in stone above the main doors is a quotation ...

"The Foundation of the State is the Education of its Youth".

*The Work Projects Administration; (WPA) came about during the "Great Depression" in the United States. It provided work for millions of Americans building public works projects like schools, parks, post offices, roads, etc. Added to NRHP 1996 #96000372

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
