This sign is about the only thing that keeps you from zipping right past Bridgeport. It is located on Route 66 and County Street 2585.

GPS: 35.536836, -98.384466

The sign shows the long gone historic 1921 Key's Toll Bridge that was the only way across the Canadian River until the 1933 William H Murray (Pony) Bridge. It wasn't cheap to cross the river using this bridge, $1.00 for car and even more for trucks which had to pay $1.50. But there wasn't another nearby bridge in the area. Removing the toll from this bridges was an issue in the 1928 State Senate race.

xThe old Harvey House Court stood on the northeast corner of this intersection there was a tiny house that had been a diner and Texaco service station here along with a motor court with cabins that were rented out. The house burned down around 2015 and the land was mostly cleared in 2019 except for a small block shed..

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
