East < GO > West

The 1926 - 1970s alignment of 66 is a dead-end spur west of town that starts just east of the entrance ramp to I-40, exit 329. Turn right on W. Tucumcari Boulevard (no sign) just before the small I-40 sign. It's easier to find the spots shown on this page if you look for them on your way back from the turn around at the end of the road.

The turn off to the old road is here:
GPS: 35.155416, -103.776445

On your way to the turn around, go straight ahead where another paved road turns south. On your way back from the the end of the road you get a great look at Tucumcari Mountain as well as the buildings hiding wells as seen in the photo above.

xThere are actually two alignments here, this abutment is from the Bluewater Creek bridge on the older alignment that was abandoned in 1950. In the upper right corner of this photo you can see a bit of a railroad bridge that is just a few feet north of the abutment.

GPS: 35.150682, -103.787947

xJust east of the bridge ruins you can spot this natural rock wall and if you look carefully there is a ghost sign advertising a gas station painted on it, the lighter section towards the left of this photo.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
