Relocated from Grants in 1937 this is one of New Mexico's oldest gas stations
on Route 66. The building moved again in 1963, but just 200 yards west
and that's when they quit selling gas. The white office and canopy part
of Herman's is a 1931 prefabricated gas station that was first located
in Gallup and moved here later in the 1930's. The station has a steel
roof. This is just west of the Red Mountain Market on old 66.
The garage section behind the office was added later. It looks like
a number of tires are being used to hold down a tarp on the roof on
another building. Old meets new in the cell tower behind the station.

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
