Old Route 66

I-40 Exit 321 to Montoya, NM
Phone:

East< GO > West

Caution: DRY WEATHER Route!

Going west from exit 321 this are the tunnels on as they pass under I-40 coming from the east. That's dried dirt & mud on the road and in the tunnels. These are really just large box culverts and as the sign says there is only 13'-11" of height clearance, MINUS however much dried mud is on the pavement.

RV Alert!
As well as having limited height these tunnels are pretty narrow. So trying this route with an RV might not be a good idea. That's especially true coming from the east because there is not much (any?) room to turn around if you decide not to go through the tunnel. As always, do not drive into or through standing or flowing water.

Going west after you cross under the freeway there are a couple of low spots in the road that flood when it rains. Going west from the tunnel I think this is the first low spot. As always, do not drive into or through standing or flowing water.

Going west the next low spot is in front of another box culvert / tunnel. DO NOT go under through this culvert, it just goes to open ranch land. These culverts provide access for ranchers to get under the freeway. As always, do not drive into or through standing or flowing water.

xGoing West this is the first old bridge you come to. From here to Montoya you have a good paved road, at least it was when we were there again in 2017.

Going east from Montoya this is where you turn and cross under the freeway. Plenty of dried mud here. As always, do not drive into or through standing or flowing water.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
