East < GO > West

The old White Cafe was located in the north section of the first floor in this building for several decades beginning in the late 20s or early 30s. There was a banquet room and apartments on the second floor. In the early 1930s the Central Pool Hall was downstairs. Various bars ere located in the south section and basement over the years. In the early 1950s the White Cafe Bar was located downstairs.

The building was built about 1928 in the Commercial Brick style using blond brick accented with red tiled brick.

xThe two story building next door was the Plaza Hotel "Next door to the White Cafe" according to an ad in the 1934 Gallup Independent Newspaper. The NRHP Gallup Historic District lists it as the Southern Hotel "Adjacent to the White Cafe" but only lists a "early 20th century building", which hotel came first is open to question. The first floor is faced with maroon glazed tiles.

xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
