The Hiland Theater opened in 1950 with over 1,100 seats and closed in 1995. The storefront wings were added later. In 2004 the Bernalillo Country took over the closed theater and in 2009 it was leased to the National Dance Institue of New Mexico and renovation began.

In 2013 the search began for artist to submit degisns for a Route 66 art project in front the Hiland Theater that would either include a bus shelter or leave room for one to be added. The artist had to reside in states that were along Roug 66 and their design had to consider the spirit of the Hiland Theater, a sense of movement and lighting such as neon or LED lights.

The winner was "Reels and Wheels", Howard Meehan the artist and he made a bus shelter as part of his art. It was installed in 2016.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
