El Rey Auto Court opened in 1936 with 12 rooms and in the 1950s the carports were enclosed to add more rooms. In 1973 Terrell White purchased the court and expanded the motel over the years. In 1994 it was expanded by buying the adjacent Alamo Lodge (cuilt in the 1950s). The complex sits on 5 aces of landscaped with trees, shrubs and flowers.

According to the 1959 AAA Tour Book at the El Rey Motel you could rent one of the 42 units here for between $8 and 12.00. Five of those rooms had kitchenettes, and the motel also had a heated swimming pool. They even had a shuffleboard, not a common feature today.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
