The late New Mexico State Senator Michael Alarid operated Mike's Food Store in this building from 1952-1985. After the grocery closed the building served as the home for a variety of churches until 2017/18 or so when Mike Gonzales purchased the building and converted it into the Barelas event Center.

xThe Barelas-South Fourth Street Historic District National Register of Historic Places registration form describes the building, designed by architect Joseph B. Burwinkie, like this:

"International Style, stucco over concrete block and piers, cantilevered sidewalk canopy, fixed window partially painted over, purple glazed tile kick plate, brick copping, narrow buff brick stacked bond in sign tower and piers flanking double doors."

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
