This former Skylark Motel was built in the early 1950s by the father and son team of Charlie & Robert Johnson. It was built on a hill with a tall glass-block tower so it could be seen from both the east & west, beckoning travelers. The VFW purchased this property in 1993. In 2014 there was a ceremony celebrating the restoration and relighting of the glass block tower and neon "Skylark" name.

The other side of the tower carries the VFW name, also in neon. The one story part of this building was added in 1979 to house a restaurant.

There is a very nice veterans memorial on the east side of the parking lot.

Charlie & Liza Johnson had earlier built their first motel around 1940 which consisted of a stone office and St. Louis style cabins. In addition to several guest rooms on the ground floor of the main building eight more rooms with garages were available in a second building on the west side of the site. The low stucco building is now part of the St. Clair Agape House.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
