This was a kind of fun spot on Route 66 in Springfield, but since these photos were snapped, a gas station has been built on this site. Some how at a busy commercial intersection a tiny bit of the original Mother Road pavement survived for so many years and apparently some small bits were saved during the building of the gas station. As of 2019 a new gas station has been built more or less in the middle of the curved piece of old road.

The pavement makes a fairly gentle curve from Kearney to Glenstone and ends just past where our car is in this photo. The roadway passes in front of the UMB Bank.

xIt is also the location of the first "Historic Route 66" sign in Springfield. The little red car behind the sign is where the original pavement begins.

The sign was installed in July of 1991 on the north edge of the triangle right-of-way at the southeast corner of the intersection of Kearney and Glenstone but has since been relocated approximately 50 ft. east of original location (just west of K-Mart driveway) due to improvements of the intersection of Kearney and Glenstone (2004).

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
