The Totem Pole Trading Post started in 1933 as a gas station and tourist cabins about 9 miles west of here. It closed permanently in September 2024. It has moved around a couple of times over the years because of highway construction and finally landed here in 1977 where it stayed until it closed in 2024 and was demolished in early 2025. When it opened in 1933 in its original location it had a totem pole on top of the building to attract the travelers, which is where the name comes from.

xIt is located just west of the Rolla on Martin Springs Drive, which is the old Route 66 at I-44 Exit 184.

xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
