JOMO Downtown Gateway Mural
Main St. N at "B" St., Joplin, MO
Phone:
These murals have been created by the Missouri Southern State University
staff and students. The first panel declares "Welcome to Downtown
Joplin Missouri" and features a geometric pattern.
The
second mural is a panoramic look at the history of Joplin with George
Spiva in the center. I don't know how long these murals are, but its
a considerable length. This panel can really be divided into three sections.
On the left side is a scene from the 1920s including a street car.
The center panel shows George Spiva standing in front of the Spiva Center
for the Arts. Spiva was a businessman and philanthropist with a significant
interest in the arts.
The right panel shows a locomotive steaming in from the left, some children
on bikes, a couple of pedestrians, and a bus on a downtown street.
Here's a photo from 2013 that shows the mural in progress. These billboards
are located on an empty used car lot on Main Street (Route 66) on the
edge of downtown so they are in a perfect place to welcome people.
