The 1930s Sunset Rest Cabins, Cafe & Texaco station was operated by Frank and Nellie Burgard from 1937 to 1960. The enclosed front porch in this photo was originally the open drive through canopy over the original visible style gas pumps. In this photo the Texaco sign would have stood off to the right of the canopy.

There was a big sign running most of the length of the ridge on top of the canopy that said "Sunset Rest Cabins". There were several tourist cabins just a bit north of the station/store building, but they were lost to progress when the land they stood on was needed for the new four lane highway through Hooker Cut in the 1940s. The store itself offered stuff like souvenirs and postcards as well groceries and Texaco gasoline. The station was a Greyhound Bus flag stop for many years. They put up a metal flag to let the bus driver know they had a passenger waiting.

Frank passed away in 1959 at the age of 78, but they had apparently been trying to sell the business since at least 1951, and maybe as early as the very late 1930s and early 1940s. Nellie ran an ad offering all the store fixtures for sale shortly after Frank passed away and that seems to match the 1960 closing date mentioned in her own obituary.

Nellie was apparently an avid antique collector because it took at least two auctions to sell them all off after she passed away in 1975 at the age of 85. The last auction of her antiques that I found was in 1977 and it mentioned including 2000 item more or less. The property itself was auctioned off shortly after that, also in 1977. The old store still stands across the road from the ruins of Dale's Sporting Good where you turn south off the four lane onto Teardrop Road to get to Devils Elbow.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
