Devil's Elbow Cafe's Rock Well House
21104 Timber Rd, Devil's Elbow, MO
Phone:
The Devil's Elbow Cafe and Conoco Station was built around 1932 and stood
about where the larger building in this photo is. The smaller rock building
was the well house for the cafe. The cafe burned down in the 1970s and
the well house was all that survived the fire.
The little stone faced well house was washed away in the huge flood
in the spring of 2017.
When we stopped by here in 2017 there was a fellow sitting in a chair
by the door of the larger building. As I sometimes do I walked over
to introduce myself and explain that we're just a couple of Route 66
enthusiasts out cruising the old road and taking a few photos along
the way.
The
gentleman in the chair turned out to be Norman "Wayne" Horine.
If you were lucky enough to meet him you were in for a real treat! Sadly
he passed away in late 2022. He happily spent what was probably an hour
chatting with me about the community and the great flood of that spring
and how it had changed their little community. The flood waters reached
just about to the top of the door on and in his building and destroyed
much of what was inside, while it washed away that little rock well
house.
This
sign listing the businesses in town stood out on the corner near the
old well house. Many years ago when the cafe was still standing there
was a similar sign about here, mostly for the cafe.

NOTE: The image on the front of this postcard
tells us that the cafe was also the Devil's Elbow Post Office at the
time the photo was taken, that dates it to between 1934 and 1941. The
car in the image appears to be from about 1936 to 1938.
