The former Hiawatha Lodge is currently a private home, it was built by Thomas & Rhoda Hunter in 1917 as a hotel. In the days before the bridge across the Big Piney River was built the Hunter's provided boats to carry people and goods from one side to the other. They also rented boats for sportsmen to use on the river. The guys who would float the logs and such down the river often stopped in for lunch.

xThe home is a log structure but even though most of it has been covered with modern vinyl siding the front gable still reveals the original logs. This is the oldest building left standing in town.

xThe smaller building just behind the main house may have been one of several cabins on the property. For a short time in the early 1950s the Devil's Elbow Hardware store was located on the first floor of the main building.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
