Sitting at the proverbial "wide spot in the road" the Elbow Inn & BBQ is popular with motorcyclists and others, especially those traveling Route 66.

In the late 1930's this was the Munger-Moss Sandwich Shop. It was built in three stages with the center section being the first in 1935, the north section (right in this photo) built about 1940 and the last section on the south (left in this photo) built about 1960.

When the new four-lane Route 66 was completed in the mid-1940s it bypassed this location the owners moved to Lebanon and opened the Munger-Moss Barbecue Shop, which grew to include the Munger-Moss Motel.

In 1946 new owners reopened the former sandwich shop and operated it as the Elbow Inn until sometime in the 1950s when it became apartments. It reopened as a cafe in the early 1960s but eventually became a residence again It reopened again in 1997, this time as the Elbow Inn and BBQ.

Like pretty much everything near the river the Elbow Inn was seriously damaged in the 2017 flood and I'm not sure of it's status as I write this.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
