Red Horse Cabins

Route 66, Cuba, MO
Phone:

East < GO > West

This is was is left of the Red Horse Cabins that opened in 1938. A Mobil gas station/garage/cafe building that later became a truck stop was destroyed in a fire in 1952. In the photo above, the cabin on the far left had 2 units and the three others had one guest room each with a garage. There might have been one more cabin just west of this building. These cabins are just across the street from MO Hicks BBQ and the Wagon Wheel Motel.

The gas station, garage and probably the cafe were open 24 hours. The cabins came with private bathrooms for as little as $1.50 a night. In his 1946 "A Guide Book to Highway 66" Rittenhouse lists the Red Horse Tavern along with the Wagon Wheel under the "cabin courts" category.

An adjacent home was moved further west and the few cabins are left that are now long term rentals.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
