Nichol's Garage / Hardesty Station & Cabins
Route 66 (Hwy. 96), Avilla, MO
Phone:
The former Hardesty Filling Station appeared to be a private home when
this photo was snapped in 2016. The filling station building apparently
also served as a tavern. The gas pumps stood between the building and
the road. The small white building in the background might be the old
well house. Together with the garage on one side and the cabin on the
other side the three buildings made a nice little business complex.
This small two unit cabin might have started life somewhere else and
been moved to this location. The siding on this cabin is what is called
"split log". It's used to make a building look like a log
structure and is commonly used on a wood frame building.
The
rubble stone two bay Nichol's Garage was built in 1930 and was used
to complement the filling station and cabin next door. One of the garage
doors has been boarded up and replaced by a service door and wood siding.
