Old Maywood Theater

320 Main St, Galena, KS

In the 1918 this building was a movie and Vaudeville theater with a balcony towards the east end of second floor. I'm guessing that there were offices, etc at the very front of the building on the second floor, which would have been a typical arrangement for a builing like this. Sometime between then and 1930 the Vaudville acts stopped and the place continued on as a movie theater at least until the mid-1940s when it apparently became home to the Purkett's Laundry & Master Cleaners. I don't know if the cleaners occupied the whole building or not.

The building sits between two smaller buildings on the west side of Main Street about three blocks south of the Cars on the Route and the Front Street Garage.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
