Military Park

(About) 103 N. Military Ave., Baxter Springs, KS

East < GO > West

This little park is across the road from the Baxter Springs High School. The historic marker is enclosed by a low wall. The marker and blue signs refer to Civil War era battles that happened here.

xAs close as I can tell these are the twin trees the marker talks about, but I'm not sure.

BAXTER SPRINGS MASSACRE
1863
THE BLOOD THAT
FLOWED IN KANSAS
BEFORE AND DURING
THE CIVIL WAR
NOURISHED THE
TWIN TREES OF
LIBERTY AND UNION

ERECTED BY
UNITED STATED DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,
NATIONAL PARK SERVICE AND THE
CITY OF BAXTER SPRINGS 1969

xI'd like to know more about the design and layout of this structure, but I haven't found much information yet. To me the low wall seems to suggest a spot to sit and contemplate the story told on the marker.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
