J. A. Dent operated a grocery and dry goods store in this building from 1895 to 1912. The second floor was occupied by dentists and other professional businesses. J. A. Dent died in 1912. Newspaper articles from the time tell that Dent had bought the business from McGammon & Co. After Dent's passing in late 1912 the grocery space was leased out. In 1917 the building was remodeled to suit the needs of a new tenant, the Quality Store, sellers of clothing and related accessories. That's the occupant of the space shown on the postcard below from the mid-1930s.

This was the site of the Indiana Hotel / Indiana House which was built in 1870 and, according to a newspaper article from the time, destroyed by fire in 1888.

Route 66 and Main Street, Baxter Springs, Kansas
I think this undated postcard is from the late 1930s going by the cars shown.

I enlarged a section of the postcard to show the building better when it was home to the as the Quality Store

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
