Schlechte's Service Station was built in 1927 for Fred Schlechte but in 1954 the station was closed because Route 66 was being widened. His son, Harry moved both this station and the nightclub (Digger's) next door to old, Route 66 and added the two service bays. The station closed in 2013.

The station was still standing in the spring of 2018, but all that's left now is the more modern steel building that was attached to the back the old wood frame station and garage as seen in this photo. The canopy that was added sometime after the mid-1990s had already partially deteriorated when we went by in 2016, it's gone now too.

I had never heard of Hercules Tires until I saw this sign, but I think the logo is pretty cool!

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
