Our Lady of the Highway Shrine

This shrine has been standing along the side of the highway since 1959. It is located about 1/2 mile north of exit 63 on I-55 west frontage road. Going south on old 66, go pass the I-55 rest area and Goby Ave. it is the 2nd farmsted.

xThe plaque on the monument reads:

"Mary
Loving Mother
of Jesus
Protect us on the highway

Council Dedicated
October 25, 1959"

xOur Lady of the Highways Shrine is located

In 1958 the Litchfield Deanery's Catholic Youth Council started the effort to erect a monument to the Blessed Virgin. Francis Marten donated space at the front of his farm along Route 66. The shrine was imported from Italy and cost about $900.00.
