East < GO > West

The heyday of the Mother Road and the Drive-in theater were pretty much the same. Why not experience both on your trip on 66 by taking in a drive-in movie?

This is the second drive-in theater to use the Route 66 name in Springfield, Illinois. The first sat on south sixth street a few blocks south of where the Cozy Dog is today. This was formerly the Green Meadows Drive-in Theater which opened 1974 and closed in 1982.

The people who own the Knights Action Park next door acquired the property in 1990 reopened the theater in 2002 with a single screen then reopened the second screen in 2004. With a capacity of 250 cars this is a fairly small theater.

xThe east screen is on the left in this photo, the west screen is just out of sight on the right side. There is a playground for families that arrive early before the movies start.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
