The old 1919 Chatham Road now dead ends at the gated Lick Creek Bridge and is part of the Lick Creek Preserve Bike Trail. It was the 1926-1930 Route 66 alignment until 1976 when Woodside Rd. was opened from Chatham Rd. to IL-4. This bridge is also known as the Old Chatham Road Bridge and was built in 1919. The photo above is the view from IL-4 just south of Woodside Rd.

To get to the bridge, take Chatham Rd. to Woodside Rd and turn west (right) to "Old Chatham Rd" and turn left. "Old Chatham Road" is located about half way between Chatham Rd and Illinois Hwy. 4.

GPS: 39.715571, -89.702478

xSome kind of utility pipe runs the length of the bridge deck and a set of solar panels are present as well. The photo above is at the east end of the bridge on Old Chatham Rd.

xWhen you turn around and head back you come to this wye in the road. Take the road on the left, it is the newer section of the Old Chatham Rd and it takes you back the way you came to Woodside Road. The dead end road on the right is a short section of the original alignment. If it still went through it would take you directly to the intersection of Woodside and Old Chatham Rd which used to make a rather sweeping curve to the west there.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
