Abraham Lincoln's Home

Phone: 217-492-4241
The Lincoln home is in the only National Park in Illinois. It is also
the only home Abraham Lincoln owned. He purchased this Greek Revival-style
cottage in 1844 and added a second story in 1855-1856 to accommodate their
growing family.

After
he was elected President and the family moved to Washington DC they,
and later their son Robert, rented the house out. That didn't work out
to well as renters sometimes abused the house as well as charging visitors
to tour it.
That came to an end 1877 when Robert donated the house to the state
of Illinois. In turn the state gave the house the federal government
in in 1972. The house and neighborhood, a four-block historic area,
is now part of the National Park Service and is open to public tours.
