x The Caravan Motel is located on the corner of N Dirksen Pkwy & Elm St., next to the Shamrock Motel. It was build in 1953 with 8 units, but six or so more have been added on since then. The original building is on the left in this photo. It was later known as the Dirksen Inn.

The original sign featured a camel, a pyramid and a palm tree, which I guess accounted for the name "Caravan". When it was new it boasted of providing what were probably fairly common features for a new motel in that time period including tile baths, air-conditioning, and Beautyrest mattresses as well as being fireproof.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
