The Arcadia Playable Arcade Museum and the Hotel Arcadia occupy these two ca. 1880s buildings. In case you need more than one day to play all the games they also have a couple of lodging units in this building, as well as one across the square in the former E. B. Bonny Restaurant building. There are more games at Arcadia's Pinball Paradise in the 1907 McLean State Bank building.

A photo from around 1915 shows the first floor of these buildings occupied by the Lawrence & Joseph Grocery on the south (left) end, a Dry Goods & Notions store in the middle, and Drug Store on the north end.

At that time the second floor of these building housed Fraternal Organizations. The Masonic Hall was above the grocery store and the International Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F) above the middle space and the drug store.

Frank Kinsey bought the Lawrence & Joseph Grocery in 1915 and may owned the Dry Goods Store at that time too. The grocery store became Kinsey's Grocery and the Dry Goods store eventually became the Recreation Club (Pool Hall). The Masons and the Odd Fellows had apparently moved out at some point because their signs were gone in a late 40s photo.

The drug store space stayed a drug store though different owners, but it was "Holohan Drug Store" from the 1930s into the 1970s or later.

Arcadia Neon Sign. I wish I had a night photo of this sign.

x The murals on the north end of the building were painted by the Walldogs. One mural honors "Shorty" Roble, a longtime local barber, the other large mural features Coca Cola at the Soda Fountain for only a nickel! The lower mural on a painted on a bench, makes for a great photo op. When the Walldogs painted the murals painted on the north side of these buildings they also "refreshed" the existing signs on the front of the building, one reads Holohan Drugs and the other says Recreation Club. The Recreation Club and the Drug Store dated back at least to to the 1930s.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
