Former Mesa Cafe

In 2023 Uncle Vait's Pizza occupied the former Mesa Cafe. Part of this building was constructed in 1940 as the Mesa Cafe. The cafe and attached gas station apparently closed around 1970. The station had started as a Skelly station and later became a Texaco station.

It is located across the street from the former Lexington Motel and the site of a long gone Mobile station. A new owner expanded the building and opened it as a the Fillin Station Restaurant in 1982 which closed in 2011. At some point after that it became the Outback Pizza restaurant.

One of the new style city name signs stands on the corner in front of the cafe. These signs popped up in Route 66 communities in Illinois in preparation for the Mother Road's 1926 centennial.

The original Texaco canopy is still in place where it sheltered the gas pumps, now it shelters the outdoor dining patio.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
